Datuk Mohd Najib has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining the Maybank Group, he served as Group Managing Director of Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) from 2006 and as Chief Executive Officer of MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad from 2012. He began his banking career with Citibank in 1985, where he served until 2002. He subsequently joined Malaysian National Insurance Berhad and was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the company in 2004.

Within the Maybank Group, Datuk Mohd Najib also serves as Chairman of Etiqa Life Insurance Berhad and Chairman of Etiqa General Insurance (Cambodia) Plc. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Maybank Ageas Holdings Berhad and Asia Capital Reinsurance Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

He is a Fellow Chartered Banker, jointly recognised by the Chartered Banker Institute, United Kingdom, and the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers, Malaysia. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and Mathematics (Magna Cum Laude) from Northern Illinois University, United States of America.
